London: A breathtaking evening gown, drawing inspiration from India’s national flower, the lotus, is currently showcased in London as part of a grand exhibition honoring the fashion legacy of the late Queen Elizabeth II.
This exquisite gown, crafted by renowned royal designer Norman Hartnell, was originally made for a state dinner with India’s then President, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, in New Delhi in January 1961. It stands as one of the major attractions in the “Queen Elizabeth II: Her Life in Style” exhibition at the King’s Gallery in Buckingham Palace.
The silk dress is adorned with intricate zardozi-style metal thread embroidery, resembling lotus blossoms. It also showcases lace, pearl beads, crystals, and sequins, embodying traditional Indian craftsmanship and cultural significance.
Curatorial insights reveal that the lotus design was intentionally selected for its representation of India’s national flower, making the gown fitting for the Queen’s visit.
Originally, the gown featured a long train cascading from the Queen’s shoulders, but it was later modified to include a short bolero jacket for a more versatile look.
The exhibition also emphasizes how Queen Elizabeth II utilized fashion strategically during her international engagements. A separate gown from her 1961 Commonwealth tour, worn at a state banquet in Karachi, was designed in Pakistan’s national colors with an eye-catching emerald-green pleat.
Curators elaborate that designers Norman Hartnell and Hardy Amies meticulously crafted culturally sensitive outfits for the Queen’s 1961 journey through India, Pakistan, and Nepal.
This tour marked a significant historical milestone as it was the first visit to India by a reigning British monarch after independence. The Queen also attended India’s Republic Day Parade as the esteemed Guest of Honour during this trip.
Organized to celebrate the centenary year of Queen Elizabeth II, Britain’s longest-serving monarch, who passed away in September 2022 at 96, the exhibition aims to showcase her remarkable fashion choices and the artistry involved in her wardrobe.
Curator Caroline de Guitaut, who is also the Surveyor of the King’s Works of Art, noted that the display highlights the Queen's thoughtful selections and the exceptional craftsmanship throughout her life.
Featuring over 300 ensembles and accessories, the exhibition spans nearly every phase of Queen Elizabeth II’s life, from her early years as a princess to her tenure as monarch. Attendees will also view rare design sketches, fabric samples, and handwritten notes that demonstrate the careful processes behind royal fashion.
The exhibition at Buckingham Palace is set to remain open to the public until October and is acclaimed as one of the most extensive royal fashion showcases ever assembled.
