Qatar Emphasizes Wildlife Conservation at CITES 2025

Post by : Mara Rahim

Qatar has underscored its significant efforts in wildlife conservation and environmental protection during the 20th CITES Conference of the Parties, currently taking place in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. This global event convenes nations to address the preservation of endangered species and fortify worldwide conservation regulations. Qatar’s involvement is a testament to its long-standing commitment to safeguarding nature and ensuring wildlife survival for generations to come.

Representing Qatar, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change dispatched a senior delegation led by Dr. Ibrahim Abdul Latif Al Muslimani, Assistant Undersecretary for Protection and Natural Reserves. Throughout the conference, Dr. Al Muslimani engaged in discussions with Mohammed bin Hamad Al Zaheri, Director General of the UAE’s International Fund for Houbara Conservation. Their dialogue revolved around enhancing collaboration on houbara conservation initiatives, which includes breeding programs, release operations, and comprehensive project oversight to secure the future of this vital bird species.

They deliberated on how collaborative endeavors can broaden scientific research, refine breeding methodologies, and reinforce enduring conservation strategies. Additionally, the two parties evaluated the progress of ongoing projects while seeking fresh avenues for partnership between Qatar and the UAE aimed at preserving this species on both local and regional levels.

The Qatari delegation also had discussions with Andrei Kim, Vice-Chair of South Korea's forests and wildlife committee, targeting wildlife protection and mutual environmental challenges. Both sides expressed eagerness to enhance cooperation through technical collaborations, training initiatives, and knowledge sharing. They also considered plans to develop new wildlife conservation projects beneficial to both nations.

Qatar’s active participation in the CITES Conference highlights its dedication to global environmental dialogues. The discussions forged during this event emphasize Qatar’s ambition to collaborate closely with international partners in protecting endangered species and advocating sustainable environmental practices. By fostering partnerships with countries like the UAE and South Korea, Qatar continues to champion global achievements towards a healthier, balanced ecosystem.
