Doha welcomed the WSJ Tech Live Qatar 2025 conference this Tuesday, marking its inaugural hosting in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. Attended by HE Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani and over 200 prominent figures, including CEOs, investors, and technology, media, finance, and entertainment specialists, the event underscores Qatar's rising importance in global tech discussions.
WSJ Tech Live serves as a pivotal forum for exploring the increasing significance of technology in shaping business strategies, regulation, and innovation. The opening panel, featuring HE the Prime Minister and moderated by Dow Jones CEO Almar Latour, examined topics such as economic diversification, digital transformation, and enhancing Qatar’s global competitiveness.
In his remarks, HE Sheikh Mohammed described Qatar as a strategic link between East and West, evolving into a regional center for logistics, diplomacy, aviation, and energy. He asserted that Doha's hosting of WSJ Tech Live symbolizes Qatar's dedication to economic diversification and nurturing a culture of innovation. With numerous tech events like the Mobile World Congress and Web Summit, the country attracts international stakeholders seeking local opportunities.
Highlighting diversification, the Prime Minister noted the economy's shift from hydrocarbons to thriving non-hydrocarbon sectors. The Qatar Investment Authority plays a crucial role in this transition, broadening economic vistas. HE Sheikh Mohammed reinforced the need to cultivate a robust technology sector, which is vital for sectors including health, logistics, education, and finance, aligning with Qatar’s aim to lead in service-oriented and AI-enabled solutions.
Qatar’s international entities like Qatar Airways, Qatar Energy, Qatar National Bank, and Ooredoo enhance its global influence, and a renewed technological focus will further elevate economic outcomes and digital infrastructure. With cutting-edge 5G capabilities, Qatar is fostering a conducive environment for innovation and development.
The adoption of artificial intelligence is a priority; Qatar is already integrating AI in government operations. Partnerships with global firms aim to establish 50 AI-enhanced public services by 2029. The country also seeks to apply AI across key sectors with national leaders in aviation.
Almar Latour applauded Qatar’s progress in AI and underscored the strategic relevance of hosting the conference in this region. Over the three-day event, topics range from fintech and digital currencies to talent development, media, sports, and defense technologies, featuring notable figures like Serena Williams and Alexis Ohanian.
This conference is a result of a lasting partnership between Dow Jones and the Government Communications Office, reflecting Qatar's burgeoning status as a global technology hub, while offering local businesses and talents invaluable connections with international investors and tech leaders.
