Post by : Bianca Suleiman

During the recent 67th Assemblies of the Member States of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in Geneva, Qatar took an active role in endorsing the reappointment of the Director General.

The delegation from Qatar was directed by Dr. Hind Abdulrahman Al Muftah, who serves as the Permanent Representative of Qatar to the United Nations Office in Geneva.

Addressing the assembly, Dr. Al Muftah conveyed Qatar’s unequivocal support for Daren Tang of Singapore, recognizing his leadership qualities while highlighting the remarkable global trust in his abilities to enhance WIPO.

She emphasized pivotal accomplishments from his first term, notably the successful finalization of two landmark treaties—the Treaty on Intellectual Property and Genetic Resources along with the Design Law Treaty.

Moreover, she pointed to the strengthened partnership between Qatar and WIPO, noting significant advancements in strategic collaboration throughout Tang’s initial term. Qatar has made notable strides in modernizing its intellectual property framework, exemplified by the establishment of a National Intellectual Property Strategy and participation in various new international treaties overseen by WIPO.

Additionally, several memoranda of understanding have been signed between Qatar and WIPO aimed at enhancing academic and technical collaboration.

Dr. Al Muftah reaffirmed Qatar’s dedication to WIPO’s missions, emphasizing the nation’s commitment to bolster cooperation in the future. She underlined the vital role of intellectual property in fostering innovation and creativity, while also contributing to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals and enhancing economic and social advantages for member nations.
