In a striking diplomatic setback, Vladimir Putin has postponed the highly anticipated Russia-Arab world summit, originally scheduled for Wednesday in Moscow. The event, meant to showcase Russia’s clout in the Middle East, saw minimal confirmations, with only Syria’s president Bashar al-Assad and Arab League chief Ahmed Aboul Gheit confirming attendance.
The postponement came just as global attention shifted to Egypt, where leaders from across the Middle East and Europe gathered in Sharm el-Sheikh for a Gaza peace summit led by US President Donald Trump and Egyptian President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi. Moscow’s absence underscored a growing reality: the Kremlin’s influence in the region is diminishing amid the ongoing war in Ukraine.
For nearly a decade, Russia leveraged the Middle East to reassert its global presence. Its 2015 intervention in Syria not only secured Assad’s regime but also provided Moscow with permanent military footholds on the Mediterranean. However, the full-scale invasion of Ukraine has forced Russia to divert military and economic resources, limiting its ability to shape regional events.
Even in Gaza negotiations, where Russia historically engaged with both the Palestinian Authority and Hamas, Moscow played no tangible role. Meanwhile, relationships with other regional players, like Israel, have cooled due to Moscow’s alignment with Iran and its stance on Palestinian issues.
The Sharm el-Sheikh summit highlighted a shift in allegiance, with several Middle Eastern leaders increasingly prioritizing ties with Trump over Moscow. Armenia and Azerbaijan’s leaders, who recently engaged in US-mediated peace talks, also attended the Egypt summit, further emphasizing Washington’s growing influence.
While Russian officials publicly welcomed the US-led Gaza initiative and suggested rescheduling their own summit for November, the postponement serves as a symbolic acknowledgment of Moscow’s reduced diplomatic weight in the Middle East.
