Prithviraj Addresses Criticism of L2: Empuraan

Post by : Mina Rahman

Prominent Malayalam actor and director Prithviraj Sukumaran has confronted the heated discussions ignited by his film L2: Empuraan. This Mohanlal-led project achieved box-office success but faced backlash for its representation of the 2002 Gujarat riots. Various political factions criticized the film, prompting Prithviraj to assert that his directorial decisions were grounded in storytelling rather than political motives.

While promoting his next film, Vilayath Buddha, Prithviraj openly discussed the contentious reception of L2: Empuraan. He firmly refuted allegations that his artistic endeavors are platforms for political agendas. “To be impacted by controversy, I would have needed a specific intent while creating it. That was not the case. The compelling narrative drove its creation, and both the lead actor and producer shared this vision. My goal with Empuraan was solely to entertain. If that missed the mark, it’s a failure on my part,” he remarked.

He also stated, “I would never craft a film merely to voice a political opinion. There are simpler and more effective ways of denoting one’s views without spending vast sums on a project. In our digital era, a social media post can often suffice. As long as I remain true to myself, I have no reason to fear or feel regret.”

Prithviraj commented on the evolving nature of online discussions, noting how social media can distort public perceptions. “In today’s climate, when someone comments on political or societal issues, one faction might brand them as a villain, while another may portray them as a champion. Both narratives can be harmful. It’s easy for words to be misconstrued. In such circumstances, choosing silence can be a wise option,” he explained.

Despite receiving mixed reviews, L2: Empuraan set records as the highest-grossing Malayalam film until overtaken by Lokah: Chapter 1 – Chandra. Nevertheless, it drew ire from some right-wing factions for its depiction of the Gujarat riots, arguing that it didn’t align with their viewpoints.

The film serves as the second chapter of a trilogy initiated by Prithviraj’s Lucifer in 2019. It significantly advanced Prithviraj’s career as a director, integrating thrilling action with political and social commentary.

Throughout his interviews, Prithviraj has reiterated that his directorial projects are steeped in narrative rather than political views. He asserts that this trilogy is about creating engaging stories for audiences, with no political motives involved. He believes cinema is fundamentally a form of entertainment that fosters creativity and emotional bonds with viewers. L2: Empuraan embodies this objective, aiming to deliver a captivating cinematic journey while dramatizing real-world issues.

By vocalizing his position, Prithviraj aims to dispel myths regarding his creations and highlight the differentiation between creative expression and political commentary. His remarks also signify a broader dialogue within the industry regarding artistic liberty, audience interpretation, and filmmakers’ obligation when portraying sensitive historical narratives.

Prithviraj Sukumaran’s insights regarding L2: Empuraan serve as a significant reminder of the intricate balance that filmmakers must strike between their artistic objectives and public perception. While depictions of historical or politically sensitive subjects can attract controversy, the filmmaker’s primary aim should remain storytelling and audience engagement. By tackling the backlash directly, Prithviraj reinforces that cinema is, at its essence, a medium for entertainment, reflection, and meaningful dialogue—not merely a conduit for political agendas.
