In Thailand, the Ministry of Defence has ramped up its preparations for the majestic Royal Barge Procession, which is set to accompany His Majesty the King during the Kathina robe offering ceremony at Wat Arun Ratchawararam Ratchaworamahaviharn in Bangkok on November 6, 2026. This event is a vital aspect of Thailand’s royal traditions, deeply rooted in the nation's cultural and historical essence.
On May 25, 2026, General Tharaphong Malakham, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, conducted an official inspection of the ongoing preparations. Accompanied by senior defence officials and military representatives, the group visited the Royal Barge Section under the Royal Thai Navy Transportation Department located in Bangkok Noi, assessing the readiness of personnel, royal barges, and ceremonial undertakings.
The inspection primarily focused on the training of the oarsmen, which is crucial for the ceremony's success. The Royal Thai Navy has finalized training for 58 royal barge captains and 104 helmsmen, who will serve as instructors to various rowing teams designated to different royal barges involved in the procession.
Current preparations include land-based rowing exercises where oarsmen hone their coordination, postures, and rowing rhythms using specially constructed training boards. This phase is essential for understanding the weight and handling of ceremonial oars before progressing to actual water exercises throughout Bangkok's rivers and canals.
Once the land-training concludes, the rowing teams will transition to on-water sessions, focusing on navigation control, synchronized rowing, and formation discipline. They will conduct final rehearsals along the designated river route ahead of the royal ceremony in November.
During their visit, defence officials also reviewed the restoration and upkeep of royal barges and ceremonial boats at the National Museum of Royal Barges. This restoration, overseen by the Thonburi Naval Dockyard, employs traditional preservation techniques that have sustained the ornate wooden vessels for generations.
Technicians meticulously repaired gaps between the wooden planks with raw cotton threads, sealing them with a resin and turpentine mix to guard against water leakage and decay from marine organisms. Once structural repairs were done, the barges moved to Thailand’s Fine Arts Department, where traditional master craftsmen carry out detailed decorative refurbishments.
The 2026 Royal Barge Procession will also honor the fourth-cycle birthday anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit. Thai officials confirmed that preparations are on track and highlighted the event's significance in showcasing Thailand’s royal legacy, naval traditions, craftsmanship, and national unity to both local and international audiences.
