Air India Express Aircraft Involved in Oman Runway Incident

Post by : Shakul

An Air India Express Boeing 737-800, departing from Muscat bound for Kerala’s Kannur airport, experienced significant damage when it veered off the runway and collided with runway edge lights during takeoff preparations at Muscat International Airport in Oman on the night of May 15. This incident has prompted an official investigation by Omani aviation authorities.

Initial reports indicate that the aircraft was in the acceleration phase for takeoff when it entered runway 26L from taxiway E7, unexpectedly colliding with several edge lights. This impact resulted in severe damage to the nose landing gear and compelled the pilots to abort the takeoff for safety reasons.

Crew members reportedly heard a loud noise from the front of the aircraft shortly after the impact. Technical teams, conducting checks post-incident, identified multiple damages, including a hydraulic leak and a punctured tire. Furthermore, both engines were found to have sustained serious internal damage due to debris entering them during the collision.

Passengers and crew were swiftly evacuated from the aircraft while it remained stationary on the runway. Emergency teams at the airport promptly ensured the area was secure and assisted passengers as they were safely transported to the terminal. Fortunately, no major injuries were reported among those on board.

The affected aircraft has remained at Muscat Airport for several days, undergoing thorough safety inspections and assessments by aviation officials. The next day, a replacement Boeing 737-800 was arranged by Air India Express to transport stranded passengers to their destination in Kannur, albeit over thirteen hours behind schedule.

Oman’s Air Accidents Investigation Sector has formally recognized the incident as an aviation accident and initiated a comprehensive investigation. This inquiry will focus on runway conditions, aircraft movement protocols, cockpit communications, and other potential technical or operational factors related to the incident.

Air India Express issued a statement confirming its full cooperation with the Oman Transport Safety Bureau during the investigation. The airline also communicated that it provided alternative travel arrangements and accommodations for affected passengers to mitigate any inconvenience caused.

This incident underscores the critical nature of stringent runway safety protocols and quick emergency response at international airports. Industry experts suggest that findings from this investigation may lead to enhanced operational safety measures to avert similar incidents in the future.
