Dhaka Implements AI System to Tackle Traffic Issues

Post by : Shakul

In a bid to alleviate persistent congestion and enhance road discipline, Dhaka has rolled out its inaugural artificial intelligence traffic enforcement initiative. This transformative approach signals a pivotal change in Bangladesh’s methods for managing urban traffic, with an increasing reliance on technology to rectify longstanding transportation challenges.

Historically, the city’s traffic management relied on manual effort, with officers employing ropes and hand signals in an attempt to direct vehicles. Drivers frequently ignored signals, pedestrian crossings, and lane regulations. Dhaka, with a population exceeding 22 million, has battled extreme traffic congestion that disrupts daily routines and hampers economic efficiency.

The innovative AI system became part of Dhaka's traffic monitoring framework in April 2026, connecting existing traffic cameras to sophisticated software that automatically identifies violations. The technology is capable of recognizing various infractions like running red lights, improper lane changes, illegal parking, and aggressive driving without the need for direct intervention from officers.

Authorities report that the new system is already influencing driver conduct in the city. Offenders now receive instantaneous notifications and penalties through digital links to vehicle registration databases. A motorist shared that his vehicle's owner was promptly notified via text message about a 2,000 taka penalty for a red-light violation captured by the AI. Many residents have noticed significant changes in driver behavior in areas monitored by the system.

Statistics from Dhaka police indicate that approximately 800 violations were logged within a single day early in the system's operation. Currently, only severe infractions attract fines, while minor breaches are often met with warnings. This gradual approach is expected to help residents adjust to the new, stricter enforcement landscape.

Human analysts at the traffic control center are tasked with overseeing AI reports to validate detected violations before fines are issued. The authorities clarified that the technology is intended to assist law enforcement rather than completely replace human oversight, aiming to minimize confrontations between drivers and traffic officers, which have been a common occurrence in Dhaka.

Nevertheless, officials acknowledged that the initiative is not without hurdles, facing several technical and practical challenges. Issues like small, damaged, or unclear vehicle plates have proved difficult for the system to accurately capture. Additionally, focus remains on motor vehicles, with plans underway to address the regulation of the city's vast number of pedal rickshaws.

Experts suggest that the long-term efficacy of the AI-driven initiative hinges not only on its technological prowess but also on effective law enforcement and policy adherence. Previous attempts at traffic modernization have faltered due to inconsistent application and lack of accountability. Authorities are hopeful that this AI-focused strategy will pave the way for a more disciplined transportation landscape suitable for Dhaka’s burgeoning populace.
