Prasarana Malaysia Berhad has announced significant enhancements in rail service reliability for 2025, with overall disruptions across its rail networks decreasing by over 50 percent from the previous year. The state-owned transport body recorded only 31 service interruptions in 2025, a notable fall from 71 disruptions in 2024.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke hailed this progress as a clear reflection of Prasarana’s renewed dedication to enhancing public transport services, especially following 2024's concerns over frequent delays that eroded public confidence in rail travels in the Klang Valley.
During Prasarana’s annual performance briefing, Loke noted that conditions have seen substantial improvements since his return as transport minister. He mentioned that persistent technical glitches had previously hindered rail operations but praised Prasarana's team for their ongoing efforts over the last three years, which have led to noticeable enhancements.
A major new performance metric, Mean Kilometres Before Failure (MKBF), was introduced to track the distance trains can travel before encountering mechanical issues. In 2024, trains experienced a breakdown once every 70,000 kilometres, while this improved remarkably to one failure every 790,000 kilometres by 2025.
In tandem with improved reliability, public transport usage has also increased. Ridership across Prasarana’s services rose 11 percent year-on-year, reaching 1.31 million passengers, nearing pre-pandemic levels. The annual performance briefing has been implemented by Loke as part of sweeping reforms in the public transport domain.
Looking forward, Prasarana is focusing on completing the third LRT line, which serves Shah Alam and has faced multiple delays. Loke acknowledged public frustration but emphasized that safety is the primary concern. He indicated that outstanding technical issues with contractors need resolution before advancing to the free-fail run (FFR) phase, which is essential for final approval.
A forthcoming meeting is scheduled for next week to outline subsequent steps and clarify the timeline for the FFR. No official opening date has been set as of now.
Additionally, existing services are scheduled for major upgrades. The Kelana Jaya LRT line will receive significant enhancements throughout the year, underpinned by a RM1 billion allocation in Budget 2026 to replace 26 train units. The Kelana Jaya line currently accommodates approximately 250,000 passengers daily.
In 2025, the Kajang MRT line became RapidRail’s most frequented service, attracting an average daily ridership of 270,000 passengers, highlighting the increasing reliance on urban rail transport.
