A federal court in the United States has sentenced Prakazrel “Pras” Michel, a renowned rapper from the famed hip-hop group the Fugees, to 14 years behind bars. The ruling was issued on Thursday in Washington, DC, after Michel faced conviction for illegally channeling millions in foreign donations to aid former President Barack Obama’s 2012 re-election effort.
During the sentencing, Michel remained silent, having been found guilty of 10 charges, including conspiracy and functioning without registration as an agent for a foreign power. The trial featured statements from notable witnesses, including former Attorney General Jeff Sessions and actor Leonardo DiCaprio.
Court papers indicate that Michel received upwards of $120 million from Malaysian financier Low Taek Jho, informally known as Jho Low, who is under scrutiny for his involvement in the 1MDB scandal. Michel allegedly exploited straw donors to funnel these funds into Obama’s campaign. This scandal pertains to the misappropriation of billions from Malaysia’s state investment fund, with various high-ranking Malaysian officials, including ex-Prime Minister Najib Razak, already facing convictions.
Prosecutors characterized Michel as having “unapologetically and relentlessly lied” to execute his schemes. They asserted that his conduct represented a profound betrayal of his nation, aimed at skewing the U.S. political landscape in favor of foreign interests. In the U.S., it is illegal for foreign entities to contribute to electoral campaigns or engage others to make such donations.
Moreover, prosecutors accused Michel of obstructing a Justice Department inquiry into Low’s activities and the 1MDB debacle, including witness tampering and committing perjury during his trial. Federal sentencing guidelines hinted at a potential life sentence given the severity and scope of Michel’s offenses.
Michel's defense argued that the foreign donations were not meant to sway policies, claiming the sentence was “excessively severe,” typically associated with terrorists and narcotics traffickers. They have conveyed intentions to appeal the ruling.
Originating from Brooklyn, with Haitian immigrant parents, Pras Michel was notably a founding figure in the Fugees alongside Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean. The group garnered two Grammy Awards in the 1990s and achieved worldwide album sales in the millions.
This case underscores the significant ramifications of improperly utilizing foreign contributions in U.S. elections and demonstrates the government's commitment to enforcing campaign finance regulations.
