On Monday, Seram Island in Indonesia experienced a powerful earthquake registering 6.0 on the Richter scale. The quake occurred at a depth of 136 kilometers, as reported by the German Research Centre for Geosciences. Thankfully, there have been no immediate reports of injuries or fatalities.
This seismic event followed just one day after a significant eruption from Mount Semeru, known to be one of Indonesia's most active volcanoes. The eruption released ash clouds that ascended up to two kilometers into the atmosphere. In response, Indonesia’s volcanology agency has advised the local populace to maintain a safe distance of at least 2.5 kilometers from the volcano due to risks like falling ash and lava flows.
Mount Semeru, or Mahameru, boasts a lengthy record of eruptions. Over the course of the last two centuries, it has seen multiple eruptions that have devastated nearby communities and necessitated evacuations. The last significant eruption, which occurred in December 2021, resulted in 51 casualties and the destruction of numerous homes, forcing over 10,000 individuals to evacuate.
Situated within the Pacific Ring of Fire, Indonesia is highly vulnerable to both earthquakes and volcanic eruptions due to the activity of tectonic plates in the area. Just this past Thursday, a magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck near Ambon, Maluku, highlighting the persistent seismic hazards faced by the region.
Authorities are actively monitoring the ongoing volcanic and seismic activities. Residents in the impacted areas are urged to adhere to safety protocols and remain vigilant for impending alerts.
