Pope Leo Urges American Youth to Approach AI Wisely

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

In a landmark live video session with approximately 15,000 young attendees in Indianapolis, Pope Leo conveyed a poignant message: while artificial intelligence can enhance learning, it must not supplant personal effort. “Don’t let it handle your homework for you,” he advised the enthusiastic crowd, in a 40-minute dialogue that represented the first youth-centric discussion during his six-month tenure as Pope.

The pope recognized AI as “one of the defining aspects of our era” and motivated the youth to view it as a helpful guide rather than a quick fix. His remarks resonated deeply with many participants who gathered from across the U.S. for the national Catholic youth conference.

In the ensuing Q&A, Pope Leo openly addressed issues related to school, friendships, and maintaining focus amid pervasive digital distractions. He urged the youth to cultivate authentic connections, stressing the importance of in-person interactions for strengthening faith and community.

On the topic of immigration—a recurring point of contention with U.S. President Donald Trump—Leo reiterated the call for unity. He said Christians should “build bridges instead of walls,” reflecting a sentiment long promoted by the late Pope Francis.

Simultaneously, he cautioned young individuals against conflating faith with political ideologies. “Be mindful not to use political terms when discussing faith,” he advised. “The Church is not affiliated with any political faction. It aims to cultivate your conscience to enable wise and loving actions.”

The session concluded with a round of applause as Pope Leo expressed gratitude for the youth's engagement and encouraged them to embody a spirit of curiosity, compassion, and responsibility—both in their online and offline lives.
