In a rare public statement, Pope Leo on Tuesday expressed cautious optimism about U.S. President Donald Trump’s 20-point peace plan for Gaza, highlighting “very interesting elements” and voicing hope that Hamas would consider the proposal within the set timeframe.
The plan, which seeks the disarmament of Hamas, comes amid ongoing conflict in the region. Hamas, which was not included in the drafting of the proposal, has stated it will review the plan in good faith before issuing a response. The group has historically rejected calls for disarmament, making the international community watchful of its reaction.
Pope Leo spoke as he departed his Castel Gandolfo summer residence, where he has increasingly been holding informal press conversations. He emphasized the need to respect human life and minimize violence. “From all sides, people are saying, 'Let's hope that there will not be violence, that people are respected.' That's very important,” the pontiff remarked.
Tensions have heightened as an international aid flotilla attempts to reach Gaza, aiming to deliver humanitarian assistance to the besieged region. Israel has warned it will enforce its naval blockade, citing security concerns amid ongoing hostilities with Hamas.
Observers note that while the Pope’s endorsement adds a moral dimension to the plan, its success hinges on cooperation from all parties involved, particularly Hamas and Israel, whose longstanding conflict continues to complicate peace efforts. The international community remains vigilant as both sides navigate the delicate balance between security, diplomacy, and humanitarian relief.
