Nepal’s Parliament Suspended Amid Minister's Resignation

Post by : Shweta

A significant political upheaval has occurred in Nepal as President Ramchandra Paudel has ordered the suspension of both chambers of the Federal Parliament. This decision was prompted by the unexpected resignation of Home Minister Sudan Gurung, who stepped down amid serious allegations of financial misconduct.

This suspension received the President’s approval based on the government’s recommendation, citing "special reasons" for this drastic step. Political analysts and opposition figures have expressed alarm, labelling this move as unusual and questioning the reasoning, particularly given that Parliament had only recently reconvened.

The turbulence began shortly after Gurung took office, resigning a mere month in. He has been linked to financial activities involving a businessman who is currently under scrutiny for money laundering. Central to the controversy are Gurung's investments in companies allegedly tied to this businessman, leading to serious concerns over integrity and ethical standards.

In his resignation statement, Gurung indicated that he prioritized a fair and impartial investigation over retaining his position. He stressed the importance of maintaining public trust in governance, suggesting that stepping down would prevent additional political strain and allow the investigation to proceed unobstructed.

In the wake of Gurung's departure, Prime Minister Balendra Balen Shah is temporarily overseeing the Home Ministry. The government has also indicated plans to establish a parliamentary committee to thoroughly investigate the circumstances and ascertain any misconduct.

The suspension of Parliament has escalated political tensions within Nepal. Opposition leaders have criticized the government's decision, arguing that interrupting parliamentary operations during such a crucial moment could undermine democratic integrity and diminish accountability.

This developing situation underscores the persistent issues in Nepal's political landscape, where transparency, governance, and institutional stability remain dominant challenges. The coming weeks are poised to be critical as investigations progress and political figures seek to restore equilibrium.
