The Polish government has officially called on Belarus to extradite two Ukrainians suspected of sabotaging its railway infrastructure, as announced by the Polish foreign ministry on Thursday. The individuals, named Oleksandr K. and Yevhenii I., are alleged to have conducted these sabotage acts under the influence of Russian directives.
The sabotage incidents occurred on Sunday along a key railway line that links Poland to Ukraine. One attack reportedly involved an explosion, disrupting train services and raising significant safety alarms. Authorities have indicated that such actions endangered critical infrastructure and exposed weaknesses in cross-border transport arrangements.
Following the attacks, the suspects are said to have fled to Belarus. Poland subsequently filed an extradition request with the Belarusian diplomatic envoy in Warsaw on Wednesday. Polish prosecutors have charged the suspects in absentia with railway sabotage, underlining the gravity of their actions and the associated public safety risks.
Polish officials emphasized the necessity of Belarus’s cooperation in bringing the suspects back to face justice. They underlined that holding accountable those responsible is vital to deter any future threats and safeguard key transport networks.
These developments arise against a backdrop of escalating regional tensions, with Poland voicing increasing alarm over cross-border threats stemming from the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. The government has announced plans to bolster the security of railway lines, which include enhanced monitoring and preventive inspections to protect passengers and freight.
Security agencies in Poland, Belarus, and Ukraine are closely observing the situation as investigations into the sabotage intensify, probing potential connections to broader attacks. The extradition process will likely face meticulous examination, as collaboration between these neighboring countries remains crucial for regional stability.
