On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi initiated a significant six-day diplomatic tour across the UAE, Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, and Italy, aiming to fortify India's connections with pivotal global allies amidst prevailing geopolitical uncertainties and economic challenges.
The itinerary prioritizes discussions on energy security, trade collaborations, critical technologies, defense relationships, and investment avenues. This visit comes as global energy sectors face instability due to escalating tensions in West Asia.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) highlighted that Modi will engage in dialogues with numerous world leaders to enhance India's global partnerships and expand collaboration in critical domains.
UAE Engagement
Modi's inaugural destination is the UAE, where he will meet with President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The agenda will include enhancing the India-UAE Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and examining the current dynamics in West Asia.
Expected outcomes include the signing of two pivotal agreements concerning liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and strategic petroleum reserves.
Discussions will also revolve around trade, investments, and the welfare of the significant Indian diaspora, comprising over 4.5 million members, residing in the UAE.
As India's third-largest trading partner, the UAE plays a crucial role as a source of foreign investment.
Netherlands Engagement
Following the UAE, Modi will advance to the Netherlands from May 15 to 17, marking his second visit since 2017.
The agenda includes meetings with King Willem-Alexander, Queen Máxima, and Prime Minister Rob Jetten, focusing on defense, security, innovation, semiconductors, green hydrogen initiatives, and water management.
The Netherlands stands as one of India's top trading partners in Europe, with bilateral trade projected at USD 27.8 billion for 2024-25, also being India's fourth-largest foreign investor.
Sweden Engagement
PM Modi will proceed to Sweden from May 17 to 18 following an invitation from Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson.
The meeting will address cooperation in green transition, artificial intelligence, startups, climate initiatives, defense, future technologies, and resilient supply chains.
Bilateral trade is set to reach USD 7.75 billion between India and Sweden by 2025.
During this visit, Modi and Kristersson will also participate in discussions at the European Round Table for Industry alongside Ursula von der Leyen.
Norway Engagement
Next, Modi will travel to Norway from May 18 to 19 for the third India-Nordic Summit in Oslo, marking his first visit to Norway in 43 years.
Meetings are scheduled with King Harald V, Queen Sonja, and Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre to explore trade, investment, clean energy initiatives, green technology, and the blue economy.
The summit will feature leaders from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, and Sweden to bolster India's strategic connections with Nordic nations.
Italy Engagement
Concluding his tour, PM Modi will visit Italy from May 19 to 20 at the invitation of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
He will also meet with President Sergio Mattarella, with a focus on advancing defense cooperation, investment opportunities, clean energy, science, technology, and innovative practices.
Bilateral trade with Italy is estimated to reach USD 16.77 billion by 2025, illustrating the implementation of the Joint Strategic Action Plan 2025-2029 aimed at expanded cooperation.
This extensive six-day tour signifies a crucial diplomatic stride by India to enhance economic and strategic partnerships amidst global uncertainty.
