Persistent fatigue may signal iron deficiency — experts urge testing and dietary steps

Post by : Saif Nasser

Many people report persistent tiredness despite adequate sleep. Clinicians note that low iron is a plausible contributor to ongoing fatigue. Iron is vital for producing hemoglobin, the molecule that transports oxygen in the bloodstream. Insufficient iron limits oxygen delivery to organs and muscles, producing weakness, profound tiredness and sometimes lightheadedness.

Dr Kunal Sood, an anaesthesiologist and pain medicine specialist, highlights the physiological mechanism: "Iron underpins hemoglobin synthesis; without enough, red blood cell production falls and the body receives less oxygen, resulting in fatigue, weakness and occasional dizziness," he says.

Certain groups face higher risk: women with heavy menstrual bleeding, pregnant women, people following vegetarian diets, and those with chronic health issues. If unaddressed, iron deficiency can progress to iron deficiency anaemia, which may present with pallor, cold extremities, breathlessness or unusual cravings such as pica.

Fortunately, iron deficiency is often reversible. Dr Sood recommends prioritising iron-rich foods—leafy greens like spinach, red meats, lentils, beans and iron-fortified cereals. Combining these with vitamin C sources such as citrus fruits, tomatoes or bell peppers enhances iron absorption.

When dietary measures are insufficient, clinicians may prescribe iron supplements, but a physician's guidance is essential before starting them. Dr Sood urges anyone experiencing prolonged fatigue to have simple blood tests to assess iron status; early intervention can restore energy and improve wellbeing.

Fatigue is common but warrants evaluation rather than dismissal. Monitoring symptoms, adopting iron-supportive nutrition, ensuring adequate rest and seeking medical assessment when tiredness persists can prevent long-term complications and help recover daily vitality.
