Renowned Irish designer Paul Costelloe, known for his elegant creations and service as Princess Diana’s personal stylist, has passed away peacefully in London at the age of 80. His family announced his death on Saturday, expressing profound sorrow and revealing he was surrounded by loved ones, including his wife and seven children, during his last moments after a short illness.

Hailing from Dublin, Costelloe was immersed in fashion from an early age, coming from a family that operated in the raincoat business. He nurtured his fashion ambitions at the Grafton Academy of Fashion Design before advancing his expertise in Paris at the esteemed Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture.

In 1979, he established his brand, Paul Costelloe Collections. He showcased his sartorial creations at prestigious events globally, from London and Paris to Milan and New York. His unique aesthetic combined modern sophistication with traditional Irish textiles, representing his deep-rooted heritage.

A pivotal aspect of his career was his partnership with Diana, Princess of Wales, whom he dressed from 1983 until her tragic passing in 1997, shaping many iconic styles associated with her grace.

His impact reached far beyond haute couture; he collaborated with popular retailers like Dunnes Stores and was honored as the closing designer for Ireland Fashion Week in October 2025, further solidifying his influence in fashion.

Despite facing some backlash in 1998 over a controversial remark on Irish women’s fashion, Costelloe later recognized the evolution of irish fashion, acknowledging its European influences.

The news of his death resonated deeply in Ireland. Taoiseach Micheál Martin referred to him as “an icon of design,” who significantly elevated Irish fashion on the global stage, while Tánaiste Simon Harris lauded his exceptional craftsmanship and commitment, underscoring that his legacy will inspire future generations.

Paul Costelloe leaves behind a lasting imprint on the fashion industry, celebrated for intertwining Irish culture with his timeless designs, which will continue to echo within the community and beyond.
