A unique Patek Philippe Perpetual Calendar Chronograph Reference 1518, produced in 1943, has fetched an astonishing 14.19 million Swiss francs ($17.6 million) during an auction in Geneva, further establishing its rank among the globe's most desirable watches.
This auction, organized by Phillips Auction House, unfolded in less than ten minutes, with five eager bidders competing for the exquisite piece. Ultimately, a telephone bidder secured the iconic watch amidst a crowd of prominent collectors and watch enthusiasts gathered at the Hotel President in Geneva to witness the historic sale.
This stainless-steel Patek Philippe has a noteworthy past; it previously made headlines in 2016 by achieving a sale price of 11 million Swiss francs ($11 million)—the highest amount paid for a wristwatch at that time. Its recent auction reflects an impressive 29% appreciation in value over nine years, enhancing its desirability among horology aficionados.
The Reference 1518 model is celebrated for its exceptional craftsmanship and scarcity. First introduced in 1941, it holds the distinction of being the earliest serially produced perpetual calendar chronograph, marking a significant advancement in mechanical watchmaking. Among the roughly 280 pieces produced, the majority were crafted in yellow gold, with only a few in pink gold and an extraordinary four in stainless steel.
This specific watch is noted as the first stainless-steel model produced, which amplifies its legendary status. With its elegant design and innovative mechanics, it stands as one of the most important creations in luxury horology.
“The Patek Philippe 1518 represents the pinnacle of design excellence, mechanical ingenuity, and exclusivity,” stated Phillips in a post-sale release. “It exemplifies the zenith of watch collecting.”
Although this 1943 model's record was eclipsed in 2019 by the Patek Philippe Grandmaster Chime, which sold for $31 million, its latest auction achievement reaffirms its prominent standing in high-end watchmaking.
The two-day auction by Phillips included 207 lots, culminating in a total sale of 66.8 million Swiss francs, achieving the highest ever for a watch auction. The event garnered participation from 1,886 registered bidders across 72 nations, underscoring the increasing international interest in rare vintage timepieces.
With its exquisite craftsmanship, limited production, and the intriguing lore surrounding its creation, the Patek Philippe Reference 1518 remains the epitome of luxury for watch collectors around the world.
