Paris Museum Increases Admission Costs Following $102M Jewel Robbery

Post by : Mina Rahman

Effective January 14, visitors from outside the European Union (EU) and European Economic Area (EEA) — encompassing Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway — will need to pay €32 ($37, AED 135.88) for entry to Paris’ most frequented museum. Tourists from the UK will incur a higher charge, as confirmed by a museum spokesperson on Friday.

This price increase follows a significant heist that occurred on October 19, where four robbers brazenly stole jewels worth $102 million, exposing critical security flaws within the renowned institution. The incident prompted concerns over the structure of one museum wing, leading to a partial shutdown in November and underscoring the urgent requirement for enhanced safety protocols.

In reaction, the museum's administration, heeding suggestions from France’s state auditor to emphasize security instead of acquisitions, has unveiled plans to install 100 external CCTV cameras by the end of 2026. These enhancements are part of a comprehensive six-year renovation strategy intended to modernize the venue while ensuring the safety of visitors.

Last year, the museum attracted nearly nine million visitors, with approximately three-quarters hailing from international locations. Officials project that the revised entry fees could yield an additional €15-20 million yearly, aiding in financing both security upgrades and continuing renovations.

Elsewhere in France, other historic sites such as the Palace of Versailles, the Gothic Sainte Chapelle chapel, the Paris Opera House, and the Chambord Chateau in the Loire Valley are anticipated to raise their ticket prices in the forthcoming year.

In related news, law enforcement has apprehended the four primary suspects involved in the jewel theft, along with several others believed to be connected. However, the stolen jewels have still not been recovered.
