The Miss Universe 2025 competition in Thailand has been overshadowed by an episode of public disrespect that shifted attention from the pageant's celebratory agenda to questions about conduct and leadership.
The incident occurred during a sash ceremony when Nawat Itsaragrisil, director of Miss Universe Thailand and event host, confronted Miss Mexico, Fátima Bosch. Viral footage shows Nawat ordering her to rise and then using demeaning language; some viewers interpreted his words as calling her a "dumbhead." When Bosch attempted to respond, Nawat interrupted, saying, "I didn’t give you an opportunity to talk."
Contestants reacted strongly. After Nawat signalled for security as if to remove Bosch, many contestants left the room alongside her in a visible act of solidarity. The collective exit became the defining protest of the moment and a clear denunciation of the treatment she received.
Outside the venue, Bosch addressed reporters. She affirmed her respect for Thailand and its people while making it clear she would not accept public insult. Her composed remarks won widespread praise online and in the press for defending personal dignity.
The video of the walkout rapidly circulated on social platforms, prompting calls for Nawat's dismissal from fans, former participants and pageant observers who demanded professional standards and equitable treatment.
Nawat later issued a public apology in which he expressed regret over the escalation. Many viewers, however, questioned the genuineness of his contrition, with social-media commentators mocking the display and suggesting the apology followed only after intense backlash.
Some users wrote comments such as:
"Are the tears for real?"
"Those looked like the driest tears I've ever seen."
The Miss Universe Organization has acknowledged the controversy and is working to address the fallout. Bosch has since resumed scheduled Miss Universe activities, and she continues to receive visible support from fellow contestants.
Beyond the immediate fallout, the episode has revived broader discussions about respect, participant welfare and the governance of international pageants. Observers note the moment could mark a turning point, underscoring that contestants demand fair treatment and that pageant rhetoric about empowerment must be matched by actions backstage.
With the final event still pending, the competition's tone has been fundamentally altered. Global attention now includes scrutiny of leadership conduct and institutional responses, not just the contest itself.
