OpenAI Introduces ChatGPT App Directory for Third-Party Innovations

Post by : Mara Rahim

OpenAI has officially begun accepting applications from external developers to integrate their apps within ChatGPT. This initiative comes with the unveiling of the new ChatGPT App Directory, which users can easily reach via the ChatGPT sidebar or by navigating to chatgpt.com/apps. OpenAI emphasizes that this shouldn't be termed a store, but more akin to a discovery hub for sanctioned applications.

With this development, ChatGPT's extensive user base of over 800 million can now instantly search for and utilize recently sanctioned third-party applications. Once an app is installed, users can invoke it during their conversations by simply typing its name prefixed with the “@” symbol or selecting it from the tools menu, thereby allowing continuity in tasks without exiting the chat interface.

OpenAI announced that the app submission process commenced on December 17, through its official blog and developer communications. Each submitted app will undergo a thorough review to ensure compliance with OpenAI's public regulations and safety protocols. Apps conforming to these standards are projected to become available to users by early 2026.

In a bid to assist developers, OpenAI will conduct a public webinar titled “Build Hour” on January 21. During this session, OpenAI engineers will detail the processes for building, designing, and submitting applications for ChatGPT while addressing queries from developers keen on joining the initiative.

This initiative broadens OpenAI’s developer environment beyond its previously restricted partner network. While OpenAI earlier launched a GPT Store, the focus was predominantly on basic text-based utilities. In contrast, the new App Directory allows for more engaging and interactive experiences through buttons, maps, sliders, and varied display options. The original GPT Store will still coexist with this new offering.

Currently, opportunities for app monetization are constrained. Developers can direct users to external sites for selling physical goods, but selling digital products, subscriptions, or in-app services remains off-limits, though OpenAI mentions that additional options may be considered in the future. All applications must adhere to stringent regulations, including the requirement for a transparent privacy policy, avoidance of advertisements, and suitability for a general audience, including teenagers.

OpenAI believes this advancement transforms ChatGPT into more than a simple chatbot. As apps start to access live data, execute tasks, and present interactive layouts, ChatGPT is evolving into a pivotal center for effective tools and workflows. For both developers and users alike, this represents a significant leap toward a more comprehensive OpenAI developer ecosystem embedded within conversation.
