OpenAI is urging the Trump administration to broaden tax benefits aimed at supporting the expanding AI industry. In a correspondence directed to the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, the leading AI organization suggested that the 35% tax credit, originally established for semiconductor manufacturing, should also encompass AI data centers, server manufacturing, and essential electrical grid components.
The firm posits that an expansion of these tax credits could reduce investment risks, attract more private funding, and speed up the development of AI infrastructure nationwide. OpenAI has already invested $1.4 trillion into building cutting-edge AI systems, including significant data centers and specially designed chips, which has drawn attention to their funding strategies for such grand initiatives.
Additionally, OpenAI highlighted the importance of grants, cost-sharing initiatives, and loans for manufacturing in the AI field, especially for components impacted by global competition, particularly from China. Specific items like transformers, electrical steel, and other essential infrastructure components were mentioned as challenges that government aid could alleviate.
Earlier this year, CFO Sarah Friar indicated a possible governmental role in facilitating OpenAI’s infrastructure funding. Although she later clarified that her comments were misstatements, they sparked discussions about federal support. The Trump administration has ruled out any direct bailouts, while OpenAI’s leadership emphasized that their request is aimed at supporting the entire industry rather than providing aid to a single entity.
This initiative aligns with ongoing efforts to rejuvenate domestic chip production as part of the 2022 Chips Act. Presently, only a small portion of the available funding has been disbursed, presenting opportunities for further actions to enhance domestic AI supply chains. OpenAI advocates for widening tax incentives and other financial strategies to ensure the U.S. retains its competitive stance in the global AI arena.
