OpenAI Acquires Sky Maker to Deepen ChatGPT's macOS Capabilities

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

OpenAI has completed the acquisition of Software Applications Incorporated, the developer behind Sky, a natural‑language interface built specifically for macOS. The move is aimed at moving ChatGPT out of the browser and more tightly into users' desktop workflows.

Nick Turley, OpenAI’s Vice President and Head of ChatGPT, described Sky as among "the most thoughtful AI experiences on desktop." Sky lets users write, plan, code and organise tasks using natural language, while also interpreting content visible on the screen—functioning as an on‑device AI co‑pilot for macOS.

OpenAI said the full Sky team will join the company, bringing specialised macOS design and engineering knowledge to enhance ChatGPT's desktop presence. Turley added that the deal "accelerates our vision of bringing AI directly into the tools people use every day," suggesting closer ties with native Mac applications.

Sky was created by a compact, design‑led group led by Ari Weinstein, recognised for crafting intuitive automation interfaces. Weinstein characterised Sky as an assistant that "floats over your desktop to help you think and create," underlining its goal to make computing more natural and collaborative.

The transaction was overseen by Nick Turley and Fidji Simo and received approval from OpenAI’s independent Transaction and Audit Committees. An investment vehicle associated with Sam Altman reportedly held a passive stake in Software Applications Incorporated prior to the deal.

With Sky now integrated into OpenAI, users should expect ChatGPT to evolve from a chat tool into an active desktop companion, able to support tasks across multiple applications in real time. The acquisition represents a strategic step in OpenAI’s effort to embed AI more seamlessly into everyday computing.
