The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources in Oman has officially partnered with Future Cities Company, known as "Tadum," to initiate an innovative system designed to monitor the country's fishing boats. The agreement was signed by Dr. Saud Hamoud Al Habsi from the Ministry and Eng. Abdullah Rashid Al Badi, the CEO of Tadum. This initiative represents a significant national advancement aimed at safeguarding marine ecosystems and modernizing the fishing industry through technology that provides 24/7 surveillance of vessel movements. It also enhances the ability of authorities to respond promptly and efficiently to maritime emergencies.
This advanced system is set to establish a comprehensive national platform, showcasing the real-time tracking of fishing boats, including their routes and sailing patterns. By leveraging this data, the ministry will gain deeper insights into fishing activities and better formulate policies for fisheries management. Crucially, this system aims to protect local fish stocks by swiftly detecting breaches and curbing illegal activity directly at the points of occurrence.
The initiative also significantly enhances maritime safety by minimizing risks at sea and streamlining search-and-rescue efforts. During emergencies, instant notifications are dispatched to the operations center. All traditional fishing vessels will be incorporated gradually to ensure thorough and organized coverage of Oman’s fishing fleet. Utilizing a coastal LoRaWAN network capable of spanning 40 kilometers, with potential extensions to 70 kilometers in certain regions, the technology is further boosted by satellite links to maintain data transmission even in remote marine areas. Details such as location, speed, direction, stop status, emergency signals, and device tampering will be continually recorded, providing a comprehensive overview of each vessel’s activities.
For fishermen, this initiative offers substantial safety improvements. An emergency button enables them to raise alerts directly if any issues arise at sea. Moreover, the detailed record of their journeys reduces the chances of boats going missing and provides an official digital account that can be referenced as necessary. For the ministry, this system will enhance fisheries oversight, facilitate better regulations, combat illegal fishing practices, and support national maritime security by integrating directly with emergency and crisis management entities.
This agreement aligns with Oman’s broader ambitions for digital transformation within the maritime sector. The new tracking system is poised to help governmental bodies bolster safety, deliver enhanced services to fishermen, and conserve the marine environment through advanced and reliable technology.
