Cultural Ties Strengthened as Oman National Museum Launches Russia-Middle East Exhibition

Post by : Mara Rahim

The National Museum in Muscat has launched an exciting exhibition titled “Russia and the Middle East: International Relations and Cultural Influences”, commemorating four decades of diplomatic ties between Oman and Russia. Organized in collaboration with the Moscow Kremlin Museums, this exhibition presents a variety of rare historical artefacts to the Omani public.

The inauguration event was honored by HH Sayyedah Dr. Mona bint Fahd bin Mahmoud Al Said, who is the Assistant Vice-Chancellor for International Cooperation at Sultan Qaboos University, emphasizing the significance of cultural synergy between the two nations.

This exhibition builds on the ongoing cultural exchange observed between Oman and Russia, notably following the previous showcase in July 2024, titled “The Splendor of Silver: Treasures from the Omani Court” held at the Kremlin Museums, spotlighting the artistry of Omani silver craftsmanship and unique Sultan-linked artefacts.

Featuring over 80 exceptional artefacts, many making their debut outside of Russia, the items include historical weapons, armors, horse ornaments, and exquisite artworks that have been preserved in the treasuries of Russian rulers. Some pieces have not exited the Kremlin for centuries.

A key focus of the exhibition is the influence of Eastern artistry on the jewelry and weapons fashioned for the Russian royal court during the 16th and 17th centuries. Additionally, visitors will encounter displays highlighting the historical significance of frankincense, once imported from Oman and integral to religious and cultural practices in Russia. This exhibition remains open to the public until 3 April 2026, allowing ample time for exploration of these extraordinary treasures.

Ambassador Oleg Vladimirovich Levin of Russia to Oman addressed the attendees, affirming the flourishing cultural bonds between the two nations. He remarked that this exhibition symbolizes the warm friendship between the peoples of Oman and Russia, praising ongoing collaborations in artistic endeavors throughout the year and viewing culture as a pivotal connection fostering mutual understanding.

Dr. Elena Gagarina, General Director of the Moscow Kremlin Museums, added context regarding the exhibition, which forms part of the international arts festival “Russian Seasons”, orchestrated by the Russian government and Ministry of Culture. This festival celebrates the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Oman and Russia, reinforcing the enduring partnership between the museums involved.

Dr. Gagarina also reflected on the successful “Splendor of Silver” exhibition from Moscow in 2024, which attracted over thirty thousand visitors. She expressed optimism that the new exhibition in Muscat will resonate with visitors, showcasing masterful works from the past, while advancing cultural dialogue between the nations.

The Moscow Kremlin Museums, welcoming around two million visitors annually, house over 160,000 artworks, with 4,000 on display in the Armoury Chamber. Their collections span from the third millennium BC to contemporary times, with strong emphasis on medieval Russian and early modern history.

This exhibition in Muscat marks a significant chapter in Omani-Russian cultural relations, presenting an opportunity for visitors to delve into centuries of heritage and artistic exchange. It underscores the rich bond between the Middle East and Russia, marking it as a noteworthy cultural event within the region.
