Omaha Woman Celebrates 20th Birthday Against All Odds

Post by : Raina Nasser

In an inspiring story from Omaha, Nebraska, Alex Simpson has reached an incredible milestone, celebrating her 20th birthday despite being born with hydranencephaly—a rare and severe neurological condition. Doctors had predicted she wouldn't survive beyond four years, yet Alex has proven them wrong.

Born missing most of her brain's hemispheres, her condition is mostly filled with cerebrospinal fluid. Typically, hydranencephaly leads to early death in infants, making Alex’s survival a remarkable phenomenon. Her father, Shawn Simpson, remarked, “She has about the size of half my pinky finger for her cerebellum, and that's about all there is there.”

Though Alex cannot see or hear, her family believes she has a unique ability to sense the emotions of those around her. Her 14-year-old brother, SJ, noted, “She knows if someone is feeling hurt or stressed. It’s amazing how she connects with the world around her.”

Shawn and Lorena Simpson attribute their daughter’s remarkable journey to their unwavering love and faith. Shawn expressed, “Twenty years ago, we were filled with fear, but our faith has been our guiding light.” On November 4, Alex joyfully celebrated her birthday surrounded by family and friends—an achievement once deemed impossible by her doctors.

Hydranencephaly affects around 1 in every 5,000 to 10,000 pregnancies, usually resulting from significant damage to the developing brain caused by factors such as stroke, infection, or trauma. While there is no cure, supportive care can extend life in exceptional cases.

Alex’s journey is a profound illustration of love, resilience, and the indomitable spirit of hope, as her family describes her as a true “fighter,” showing that medical forecasts aren’t infallible.
