Late Monday night, a powerful earthquake measuring 7.5 on the Richter scale struck northeastern Japan, resulting in injuries to approximately 30 individuals and generating tsunami waves reaching 70 centimeters along the Pacific coastline, as reported by the Japanese government. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the quake occurred at 11:15 pm off the eastern shore of Aomori Prefecture at a depth of 54 kilometers. The agency has indicated that another earthquake of similar or greater magnitude could strike the area soon.
This marks the first instance where the agency has issued an alert for coastal areas, including Hokkaido and the Sanriku coastline, which encompasses Aomori, Iwate, and Miyagi prefectures. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has urged the populace to remain vigilant and heed instructions from local authorities. Residents are recommended to prepare for a potential subsequent quake by ensuring that furniture is secured and emergency plans are in place, while continuing with daily activities cautiously.
The reported injuries have primarily originated from Aomori Prefecture and Hokkaido. The agency explained that the region lies along a significant undersea trench where the Pacific plate converges with Japan’s main island, Honshu, making it susceptible to severe seismic activity. Upon further analysis, the agency adjusted the quake's initial recorded magnitude from 7.6 down to 7.5. While a tsunami warning predicted waves as tall as 3 meters, the highest wave observed was recorded at 70 centimeters near Iwate.
Authorities are keeping a close watch on developments and have advised the public to prepare for possible further tremors. This incident underscores Japan’s susceptibility to substantial natural disasters, particularly in regions where tectonic movements are frequent. Officials emphasized the need for residents to remain informed about official advisories to ensure community safety.
