Post by : Mara Rahim

In the rapidly evolving cityscape of Riyadh, the Noor Riyadh festival stands as a dominant cultural beacon, elevating the city on the global arts stage. Through the medium of light, it blends local and global artistic experiences, forging connections between Riyadh's rich heritage and its dynamic future.

Initiated in 2021 by the Royal Commission for Riyadh City alongside the Riyadh Art Program, Noor Riyadh has redefined public art engagement. The festival integrates stunning light installations with engaging programs, making art accessible and weaving creativity into the fabric of daily life throughout the city.

Over four editions, Noor Riyadh has dramatically shaped Riyadh's artistic and urban landscape, positioning it as a premier destination for contemporary art. Since its inception, the festival has transformed numerous locations into vibrant artistic spaces and welcomed over 9.6 million visitors, signaling strong community involvement and international acclaim.

Over 68 days of artistic endeavors and nine months of exhibitions, Noor Riyadh features more than 450 light installations curated by 365 artists from Saudi Arabia and beyond, solidifying its place as one of the world's largest showcases for light art. This diverse array of artistic expressions invites visitors to engage in a multifaceted dialogue, fostering a spirit of creativity within the community.

Central to the festival's impact are its public programs, offering over 6,240 cultural activities tailored to various demographics. These initiatives enhance awareness of the arts, encourage active participation, and provide immersive spaces for everyone to connect with creativity.

Globally, Noor Riyadh has set 16 Guinness World Records, reinforcing the city’s status as an innovator in light art. The festival has drawn thousands of international attendees, including curators, artists, and technology experts, establishing Riyadh as a nexus for creative collaboration and knowledge sharing.

The upcoming fifth iteration of Noor Riyadh in 2025, themed “In the Blink of an Eye,” aims to broaden its impact further. This edition will showcase works exploring themes of movement, time, and connectivity, symbolizing the city's rapid transformation. Art installations will be strategically placed across six key locations, bridging Riyadh's historic districts with contemporary routes, including critical metro stations that enrich the urban experience.

In just a few short years, Noor Riyadh has evolved into more than a mere festival; it has become a comprehensive artistic endeavor that deepens the connections between the city's residents, visitors, and their surroundings. Each edition expands the circle of light and diversity, fostering collective memories while affirming Riyadh’s identity as a city that embraces art in everyday life.

Through the Riyadh Art initiative, Noor Riyadh expands as a vibrant hub for contemporary arts, reinforcing Riyadh's vision as a global city of creativity and illumination. Annually, the festival mirrors the city's aspirations and cultural dedication, helping Riyadh shine ever more brightly on the world stage.
