State media reported that a gas explosion at the Liushenyu coal mine in Shanxi province resulted in at least 90 fatalities, marking the most severe mining disaster in China in nearly two decades.
The incident took place at 7:29 pm local time on Friday while 247 miners were still underground. Rescue efforts managed to save most workers by Saturday morning, although some remain unaccounted for. A significant response team of 345 emergency personnel has been deployed to search for the remaining missing individuals.
Footage from state broadcaster CCTV depicted helmeted rescuers with stretchers at the incident site, where ambulances were on standby. Initial assessments showed alarming levels of carbon monoxide, a dangerous gas, surpassing safety standards, and further reports indicated that some of the trapped miners are in critical condition.
President Xi Jinping has called for robust rescue measures and mandated a detailed investigation into the tragedy, emphasizing the necessity for enhanced safety protocols in workplaces to avert similar occurrences.
Authorities have confirmed the detention of an individual responsible for overseeing the mine as part of the legal inquiry.
Shanxi is well-known as a core hub for China’s coal mining sector. Despite improvements in safety measures over recent years, incidents still arise owing to relaxed safety standards and ambiguous regulations.
This catastrophe echoes a similar event in 2009 in Heilongjiang province when 108 lives were lost, elevating Friday's disaster to one of the gravest in modern Chinese mining history.
