Car Explosion at Delhi's Red Fort Claims Eight Lives as Investigators Explore Links to Kashmir Arrests

Post by : Raina Nasser

An explosion involving a vehicle near Delhi's Red Fort on Monday night has resulted in the deaths of eight individuals, leading to a significant investigation into potential terrorist connections. Authorities are exploring whether this incident relates to the recent detention of seven men in Indian-administered Kashmir and the confiscation of 2,900kg of explosives in Faridabad.

The blast occurred at 18:52 local time when a slowly moving car halted at a busy traffic light and ignited. Footage from the scene depicts the charred remains of a white Hyundai i20 alongside damage to various other vehicles, including autorickshaws and cycle rickshaws.

Officials have condemned the attack as “a dreadful act of terrorism conducted by anti-national elements.” Prime Minister Narendra Modi labeled it a “conspiracy,” vowing that “all perpetrators will be apprehended.” Both Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Home Minister Amit Shah expressed similar views, with Shah instructing officials to “locate every single person responsible for this event.”

The National Investigation Agency (NIA), tasked with counter-terrorism efforts, has stepped in to manage the investigation. They are assessing extensive documentation and examining various avenues, including connections between the Delhi incident, recent arrests in Kashmir, and the sizeable explosives cache found in Faridabad.

In a preceding operation, Jammu and Kashmir police apprehended seven individuals, including two physicians, indicating the possible existence of a “white-collar terror network.” Authorities also reported seizing arms, including two automatic rifles, alongside the significant quantity of bomb-making materials. Investigators are also pursuing leads pertaining to an individual identified in viral images as the suspected driver of the vehicle involved in the Delhi explosion, although details remain unclear.

In the meantime, the Red Fort vicinity remains cordoned off as authorities continue their investigation. The ownership of the vehicle and specifics regarding the explosion are yet to be disclosed. Meanwhile, unverified reports and media leaks are generating speculation, though police emphasize that the inquiry is ongoing and all leads are being thoroughly scrutinized.

This unfortunate incident raises alarms regarding urban security and emphasizes the escalating challenges of identifying coordinated terror activities in the capital of India. Officials continue to encourage citizens to stay vigilant and report any suspicious behavior as the NIA pursues a comprehensive investigation.
