NHTSA Broadens Probe Into GM L87 Engine Bearing Failures Affecting 286,000 Vehicles

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has escalated its inquiry into roughly 286,000 General Motors vehicles amid mounting reports of engine problems, a move that has attracted attention from drivers and safety experts nationwide.

Officials point to potential defects in the bearings of GM's L87 6.2-litre engines, which power models such as the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and Cadillac Escalade. If the issue persists, it can cause significant engine damage and increase the likelihood of on-road failures.

From Preliminary Investigation to Expanded Analysis

The agency opened a preliminary probe in January, prompting GM to announce a recall in April. At that time, the automaker said some connecting rod and crankshaft parts might be compromised, raising concerns about overall engine reliability.

New submissions to the regulator — including 1,157 reports of bearing failures — have led NHTSA to elevate the case to an engineering analysis. The review now examines vehicles both covered by the recall and those that may fall outside its initial scope.

Implications for Vehicle Owners

Owners of potentially affected GM models should closely monitor engine performance and adhere to any recall communications from the manufacturer. Experts warn that bearing failures can produce catastrophic mechanical damage and costly repairs, making swift inspection and remedial action essential.

As the engineering assessment progresses, the industry is watching to see whether regulators will require expanded remedies or further recalls to address the problem comprehensively.
