Jerusalem, Nov 17, 2025 – Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has firmly reiterated his stance against establishing a Palestinian state, amid growing pressure from far-right coalition partners discontented with a U.S.-supported draft U.N. resolution advocating Palestinian independence.
This declaration follows the U.N. Security Council's discussions on a draft resolution that aligns with President Donald Trump’s Gaza peace strategy. This plan proposes a transitional “Board of Peace” for Gaza, seeking reconstruction and economic revitalization, suggesting reforms within the Palestinian Authority could ultimately lead to Palestinian self-governance.
Despite gaining support from key U.S. allies and various Muslim-majority nations, the proposal has incensed Israeli far-right leaders. Ministers Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich have pressured Netanyahu to explicitly reject Palestinian statehood, with Ben-Gvir threatening to withdraw from the coalition if decisive action isn't taken.
On Sunday, Netanyahu stated: “Our opposition to a Palestinian state in any territory is unchanged. Gaza needs to be demilitarized, and Hamas disarmed, whether the process is easy or difficult. I need no reassurance, tweets, or lectures from anyone.”
Other senior officials, including Defense Minister Israel Katz and Foreign Minister Gideon Saar, have echoed these sentiments against Palestinian statehood, signalling the growing internal pressure on Netanyahu. The staunch far-right stances expose the potential vulnerabilities of Netanyahu’s coalition, as any withdrawal could jeopardize his administration ahead of the upcoming elections in October 2026.
Netanyahu previously endorsed Trump’s Gaza plan during a September visit to the White House but had remained relatively quiet on Palestinian statehood until now, facing criticism from far-right ministers regarding his perceived inaction. They have voiced accusations of political wavering while insisting on a clear declaration that a Palestinian state will not arise on Israeli soil.
The Gaza conflict escalated following Hamas’ cross-border assault on October 7, 2023, resulting in over 69,000 fatalities and extensive destruction throughout the Palestinian region. A ceasefire was declared on October 10, 2025, yet sporadic violence persists.
Experts highlight that the resurgence of discourse on Palestinian statehood underscores the precarious nature of Netanyahu’s right-wing coalition and the ongoing complexities of the Middle East peace process. This issue also has wider international ramifications as Israel faces pressure from the U.S., European allies, and Muslim-majority nations advocating for a two-state solution.
As Netanyahu and his cabinet uphold their rigid stance against Palestinian autonomy, regional tensions remain heightened, leaving the future of Israeli-Palestinian relations in considerable jeopardy.
