In a significant step amidst recent controversies, the Government of India is set to overhaul the NEET-UG examination format. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has announced that from 2027, the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for undergraduate medical admissions will transition entirely to a computer-based format, aimed at enhancing transparency and securing the integrity of the examination process.
This decision follows the cancellation of the NEET-UG 2026 exam amidst allegations of paper leaks, which raised alarm among students and parents, prompting calls for strict action and a thorough re-examination procedure.
During a press conference in New Delhi, Minister Pradhan reassured stakeholders of the government's resolve to prevent such incidents from recurring. Understanding the dedication students invest in preparation for competitive exams like NEET, he committed to implementing robust measures for ensuring future integrity in the examination.
Pradhan also announced that the re-examination for NEET-UG 2026 is set for June 21, 2026. Additionally, he confirmed the comprehensive shift to a computer-based testing system starting in 2027, a move anticipated to minimize risks of paper leaks and enhance monitoring capabilities during exams.
Officials from the Central Bureau of Investigation are actively investigating the alleged misconduct tied to the cancelled examination, looking into possible links to organized cheating networks and individuals involved in the leak.
The shift to a computer-based format is expected to modernize the examination landscape, bolster security measures, and effectively control unauthorized access to question papers. The use of advanced technology for monitoring will enhance exam integrity, ensuring better oversight.
Education specialists view this transition as one of the most significant reforms in India's medical entrance examination history. However, students and coaching institutions are urging for adequate resources and preparation tools to be in place prior to the national rollout of the new digital exam structure.
The NEET-UG is one of the most prominent competitive entrance examinations in India, offering crucial pathways to medical colleges nationwide. With millions of candidates sitting for the test each year, ensuring fairness and transparency remains a top priority for the government and educational authorities.
