Rising Star
Gatwa's career showcases his remarkable versatility—from his acclaimed performance as Eric Effiong in Sex Education to his adventures in Doctor Who and now his venture into voice acting. At just 31, he has garnered acclaim for his stage roles in The Importance of Being Earnest and Born With Teeth. His pairing with Broadway sensation Cynthia Erivo in Bad Fairies exemplifies yet another exciting creative direction.
Anticipations for Bad Fairies
This animated feature aims to subvert traditional fairy tales, focusing on a group of rebellious fairies who defy the conventions of their enchanted universe. It is described as a "chaotic and delightfully subversive" musical experience brimming with wit and emotion.
Behind the Scenes Talent
The film is directed by Megan Nicole Dong, noted for her contributions to Centaurworld, with veteran DreamWorks animator Olivier Staphylas joining her as co-director. The script, rich in humor and heart, is penned by Deborah Frances-White.
Music plays an integral role in the storytelling, with songs crafted by Tony Award winners Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss, the creative minds behind Six: The Musical. Additionally, Isabella "Machine" Summers of Florence + The Machine will compose the score, while Ian Eisendrath, known for KPop Demon Hunters, serves as the executive music producer.
Top Production Team
Bad Fairies boasts a prestigious team, including producer Carolyn Soper, editor Sim Evan-Jones, and cinematographer James C.J. Williams. Character designs are by Uwe Heidschöetter, with storytelling guided by Rikke Asbjoern and Chris Garbutt. Production design is led by Justin Hutchinson-Chatburn and Mike Redman, while DNEG Animation, a top London studio, handles the digital animation.
New Horizons Ahead
This project represents the inaugural film from the Warner Bros. and Locksmith Animation partnership. With a blend of Broadway brilliance, cutting-edge animation, and a narrative that reinterprets fairy tales, Bad Fairies is set to be a unique cinematic experience.
Ncuti Gatwa, represented by Curtis Brown, UTA, Status PR UK, and Ziffren Brittenham LLP, continues to diversify his impressive career, and his role in Bad Fairies reaffirms his standing as a versatile and dynamic presence in the entertainment world.
