NASA has announced that astronauts will not participate in the upcoming Starliner mission, which will now be a cargo-only flight. This decision follows the complications observed during the first crew's return, where multiple technical issues were identified and are currently under review.
Earlier this year, astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore spent over nine months aboard the International Space Station but had to return without crew due to malfunctioning thrusters and other safety concerns. NASA opted for a safe return with a different spacecraft, ensuring the astronauts returned home unharmed.
In response, NASA and Boeing engineers are conducting thorough investigations into the causes of the thruster malfunctions and other system irregularities. Ongoing tests validate their commitment to prioritizing safety before crewed flights are reinstated.
The forthcoming Starliner mission will focus on a cargo delivery to the International Space Station, tentatively set for April next year. This mission aims to validate the spacecraft's capability to operate safely in a crewless mode.
Should this cargo endeavor succeed, NASA still plans three more crewed flights for Starliner before the retirement of the space station in 2030, a reduction from the initially approved six due to encountered delays and technical hurdles.
Despite these challenges, Boeing remains dedicated to the Starliner initiative. The company continues its collaboration with NASA to fulfill all safety requirements before resuming astronauts' flights.
NASA has reiterated that propulsion system tests and evaluations of critical components are still in progress. Two Starliner missions are under development for next year, contingent on the outcomes of forthcoming assessments.
A decade ago, NASA selected both Boeing and SpaceX to facilitate astronaut transport to and from the International Space Station following the Space Shuttle's retirement. While SpaceX successfully launched its first crewed mission in 2020, Boeing's timeline has experienced significant delays and challenges, amplifying the urgency for the Starliner project to demonstrate its dependability.
