Murthy Advocates for Extended Work Hours to Propel India's Growth

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

Narayana Murthy, co-founder of Infosys, has ignited a new discussion by encouraging young Indians to consider longer work hours if the nation aims to rival developed economies such as China.

In a recent conversation, Murthy pointed to China's renowned 9-9-6 culture—where employees work from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., six days a week—a model that has propelled tech behemoths like Alibaba and Huawei. He asserted that for India to genuinely quicken its economic growth and bolster global competitiveness, its citizens must adopt a comparable level of dedication and discipline.

Understanding the 9-9-6 Work Culture

The 9-9-6 framework is an intensive work regimen demanding a total of 72 hours per week from its workforce. Proponents argue that it facilitated China’s extraordinary growth during its rapid expansion, while detractors caution against the dangers of burnout, stress, and health complications. Notably, China’s Supreme Court deemed the model illegal in 2021, although reports indicate its continued informal presence in certain firms.

Murthy contrasted this with India’s prevailing situation, highlighting that China's economy is nearly six times more substantial than India’s. “A concerted effort from citizens, businesses, and leaders is essential to narrow the gap,” he stated, insisting that productivity and diligent work must take precedence over talks of work-life balance.

The Ongoing Debate in India

Murthy's remarks have reignited the ongoing dialogue surrounding work culture in India. Supporters contend that embracing extended work hours could amplify productivity and accelerate the nation’s economic aspirations. Conversely, many advocate for a balanced approach that prioritizes employee welfare, mental health, and efficiency, cautioning that excessive workloads may ultimately be counterproductive.

As India strives to establish itself as a global technology and innovation center, the key challenge lies in striking a balance between relentless effort and sustainable development, ensuring that progress does not undermine the health of its workforce or the well-being of society.
