Moscow Expects Revised US Peace Plan to Align with Putin-Trump Accords

Post by : Raina Nasser

On Tuesday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov discussed the current state of peace negotiations regarding the Ukraine conflict. He indicated that while Russia had previously welcomed a US peace initiative, it is now anticipating a revised interim plan following consultations between the United States and Ukraine along with its European allies.

Lavrov stressed that this updated plan should reflect both the spirit and the specifics of the agreements struck between President Vladimir Putin and former President Donald Trump during their meeting in Alaska back in August. The key principles for peace, established during that summit, were a significant aspect of the initial proposal, according to Lavrov.

The original peace plan outlined significant stipulations, including Ukraine's commitment to refrain from NATO membership, a cap on its military force to 600,000 soldiers, and ceding parts of the Donbas to Russia, designated as a demilitarized zone. Additionally, it mandated that Ukraine conduct elections within a period of 100 days. Nevertheless, several provisions have since been altered or delayed.

Lavrov cautioned that if the new peace framework does not respect the agreements made in Alaska, Russia would interpret it far differently and could potentially reject it. He reiterated that while Russia is not pressuring the US, it hopes to receive the revised text in the near future.

These statements were made during a news conference in Moscow prior to upcoming discussions between Russian and US officials likely to take place in Abu Dhabi.

Since its onset in 2022, the Ukraine conflict has resulted in extensive devastation and casualties. Ongoing peace negotiations have yet to resolve disagreements regarding the terms that could secure sustained tranquility in the region.

In conclusion, Russia advocates for a peace plan that corresponds with the original framework established by Putin and Trump, awaiting a revised US proposal before making a decision, while underscoring that alterations to core conditions could elicit a different response from Moscow.
