Rising Tensions in Moldova’s Orthodox Church Over Alleged Russian Affiliation

Post by : Raina Nasser

Chisinau, Moldova — Tensions within Moldova’s Orthodox Christian community flared anew on Wednesday, with the nation’s major church disputing allegations of functioning as a “Russian church.” This controversy has reignited age-old disputes between two opposing Orthodox factions — one that aligns itself with Moscow and another that has ties to Bucharest.

More than 90% of Moldova's citizens identify as Orthodox Christians, yet they are divided between two prominent churches: the Moldova Metropolis, which operates under the Russian Orthodox Church, and the Metropolis of Bessarabia, which is affiliated with the Romanian Orthodox Church. Neither body claims full ecclesiastical independence, complicating the already intricate political and religious landscape within the nation.

The discord began when the Romanian-aligned Metropolis of Bessarabia accused its Moscow-affiliated counterpart of “mass deception,” claiming that it misrepresents its true domestic ties to its followers. In rebuttal, the Moldova Metropolis staunchly denied allegations of acting as a proxy for the Russian Orthodox Church, insisting on its spiritual independence and dedication to maintaining national religious unity.

Experts on religion declare that this dispute mirrors larger geopolitical tensions, as Moldova strives to navigate its historical and cultural influences from both Russia and Romania. The Orthodox Church, historically a cornerstone of Moldovan identity, is now embroiled in a vital debate about national sovereignty and spiritual fidelity.

Even with intensified public scrutiny, both factions retain significant sway over various segments of Moldova's populace. Analysts caution that if attempts at reconciliation are not made, the schism could widen, creating further divisions among communities during a crucial time for Moldova’s future.
