According to preliminary vote counts released on Friday, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is set for a significant victory in the Bihar state elections. This anticipated success marks a considerable recovery for Modi following a tough national election last year, where his party struggled to maintain a parliamentary majority.
Bihar, with a population close to 130 million, is critical in Indian politics, being the third-most populous state. Its representation in Parliament is substantial, as it contributes the fifth-largest number of lawmakers, making control of the state essential for shaping national narratives and the Hindi heartland.
As per the Election Commission of India, the NDA is currently leading in over 170 seats, comfortably surpassing the majority threshold of 122 in the state assembly. Reports suggest the coalition might secure as many as 191 seats, indicating a gain of 69 seats from the previous election.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emphasized this development with a tweet stating, “Bihar’s mandate is unequivocal! The electorate has spoken — development, not jungle raj, is the priority for governance!”
Political analysts underscore that one significant factor in the Bihar elections was Modi’s initiative last September to allocate 75 billion rupees ($853 million) to women under a state employment program. This strategy appears to have mobilized female voters, a demographic increasingly critical in shaping electoral results in India.
Amitabh Tiwari, a political analyst conducting surveys across Bihar, pointed out that the NDA drew considerable support from women voters. According to Tiwari’s VoteVibe survey, the coalition captured 48.5% of the female vote, outpacing the primary opposition by more than 10 percentage points.
This victory in Bihar signifies a resurgence for Modi, who has gained traction through various state-level elections after last year's national setback. It also positions the NDA favorably ahead of upcoming elections in states like Assam, West Bengal, and Tamil Nadu, where the BJP currently only governs Assam.
The results from Bihar underline the efficacy of development-oriented policies and targeted voter engagement, reinforcing Modi’s approach of intertwining welfare initiatives with a governance-focused message. Observers suggest that this outcome could influence national political dynamics and fortify the NDA’s standing as it prepares for future parliamentary challenges.
