Prime Minister Narendra Modi departed for South Africa on Friday to engage in a three-day agenda at the 20th G20 Leaders’ Summit in Johannesburg. This vibrant city, recognized as South Africa’s largest and a significant economic center, is hosting the summit under the theme “Solidarity, Equality and Sustainability.” Notably, this marks the fourth successive G20 summit convened in the Global South.
A point of interest this year is the notable absence of leaders from two major powers, the United States and China. The US President opted out, citing worries over perceived discrimination against the Afrikaner minority in South Africa, while Chinese President Xi Jinping is also missing from the summit due to curtailments in his global engagements.
At the summit, PM Modi is set to address all three sessions, centering his remarks on inclusive economic development, climate resilience, and advancements in artificial intelligence. He aims to convey India’s stance on critical global matters including trade, development financing, disaster risk management, climate fluctuations, energy transitions, food systems, essential minerals, and evolving labor markets.
On the sidelines, PM Modi is anticipated to hold discussions with various leaders and participate in the India-Brazil-South Africa (IBSA) Leaders’ Meeting, hosted by South Africa.
In his departure address, PM Modi underscored the significance of this summit, labeling it “particularly special” given that it is the first G20 convening on African soil. He emphasized that India’s guiding principle of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” coupled with “One Earth, One Family, One Future” will inform India’s contributions during discussions.
The G20 presidency held by India this year marked a historic moment with the African Union being welcomed as a G20 member. This summit aims to bolster Africa’s presence and influence in global economic conversations and developmental dialogues.
The three focal sessions of the G20 include:
Inclusive and Sustainable Economic Growth: Topics covering economic development, trade, financing, and debt issues.
A Resilient World: Addressing disaster risk reduction, climate challenges, energy transitions, and food systems.
A Fair and Just Future: Involvement of critical minerals, decent employment, and artificial intelligence trends.
PM Modi’s engagement in the summit reflects India’s growing stature in global decision-making and its dedication to nurturing collaboration among emerging economies and developmental nations.
