Real Madrid clinched a 2-0 victory against Real Oviedo in La Liga, yet the standout moment at the Santiago Bernabeu was the fan response to star forward Kylian Mbappe. Upon his return from injury during Thursday’s match, sections of the crowd expressed their displeasure towards him with loud whistles.
Disappointment loomed as Madrid entered the game after losing the league title to Barcelona the previous week. With that El Clasico defeat ensuring Barcelona's championship, Real Madrid finds itself without a major trophy for a second season running. This frustration was palpable during their match against the already relegated Oviedo.
Youngster Gonzalo Garcia set the tone for the match by scoring before halftime, finishing calmly after receiving a pass from Brahim Diaz. Real Madrid dominated for most of the game, even with many empty seats evident in the Bernabeu.
England's Jude Bellingham later secured the second goal, assisted by Mbappe. Bellingham skillfully maneuvered within the box before firing a low powerful shot past Oviedo's goalkeeper, Aaron Escandell, confirming the win for Los Blancos.
After recovering from a thigh injury, Mbappe began the game on the bench. When coach Alvaro Arbeloa called him into action in the second half, several fans responded with whistles. Reports hinted that some supporters disapproved of his recent trip to Sardinia while on recovery.
Following the match, Mbappe acknowledged the criticisms, stating that players must accept the fans' reactions to improve situational performances. He added that while public frustrations can be difficult to grasp, it’s essential to learn from them.
Despite the backlash, Mbappe has had a remarkable individual season, netting 41 goals in 41 matches across all competitions leading up to this encounter. Yet, many fans feel the team has faltered in commitment and consistency during critical matches this season.
The mood within the Bernabeu also mirrored broader discontent surrounding the club. Some fans displayed banners criticizing club president Florentino Perez, while speculation grows about the future of coach Alvaro Arbeloa. Former manager Jose Mourinho has been linked with a potential return to Real Madrid.
In other La Liga matches, Girona drew 1-1 with Real Sociedad, allowing them to distance slightly from relegation threats. Valencia and Rayo Vallecano also ended in a 1-1 tie, intensifying the struggle to avoid relegation in the season’s final stretch.
