Japan’s hopes for a strong 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign have suffered a major setback after star winger Kaoru Mitoma was left out of the national squad because of a hamstring injury. The decision was confirmed by Japan head coach Hajime Moriyasu while announcing the country’s final World Cup team.
Mitoma, who plays for English club Brighton & Hove Albion, suffered the injury during a recent Premier League match against Wolverhampton Wanderers. Medical staff later decided that he would not recover in time for the tournament.
The 28-year-old winger is considered one of Japan’s most important attacking players. Known for his speed, dribbling skills, and creativity, Mitoma has become a key figure for both club and country over the past few years. His absence is being seen as a huge loss for Japan ahead of football’s biggest tournament.
Coach Hajime Moriyasu admitted that leaving Mitoma out was a difficult decision. He described the player as “a major presence” in the national team but said the squad still has enough strength and depth to compete strongly.
Japan will enter the 2026 FIFA World Cup with high expectations after impressive performances in recent international tournaments. The team reached the Round of 16 in the last two World Cups and has earned respect for its disciplined and energetic style of football.
The country has been placed in Group F alongside the Netherlands, Sweden, and Tunisia. Japan’s opening match is scheduled against the Netherlands on June 14 in the United States.
Apart from Mitoma, Monaco forward Takumi Minamino also missed selection because of injury concerns. However, there was positive news for supporters as defender Takehiro Tomiyasu returned to the squad after a long period affected by injuries.
Football experts believe Mitoma’s absence could affect Japan’s attacking strength, especially during difficult matches against strong European opponents. His ability to create chances and break through defenses made him one of the team’s most dangerous players.
Mitoma became globally popular during the 2022 FIFA World Cup, where his performances helped Japan defeat strong teams such as Germany and Spain. His famous assist against Spain became one of the tournament’s most talked-about moments.
Despite the setback, Japan still has several experienced players capable of leading the team. Captain Wataru Endo, defender Tomiyasu, and young attacking talents are expected to play important roles during the tournament.
Injuries are often one of the hardest parts of professional sports. Missing a World Cup is especially painful because the competition only happens once every four years. For Mitoma, the timing of the injury is a major disappointment both personally and professionally.
Still, many fans remain hopeful that Japan can continue its recent progress on the world stage. The team has built a strong reputation for teamwork, discipline, and fighting spirit, qualities that could help them compete even without one of their biggest stars.
