Miss Universe president’s remark on Côte d’Ivoire sparks global outrage

Post by : Saif Nasser

The Miss Universe pageant is once again surrounded by controversy after a surprising statement made by Miss Universe Organisation (MUO) president Raul Rocha. His remark about why Olivia Yacé from Côte d’Ivoire did not win the Miss Universe 2025 crown has caused anger among fans, contestants, and many people across the world. For many supporters, his explanation raised serious questions about fairness and respect within the pageant.

Raul Rocha suggested during a livestream that one of the reasons Olivia Yacé did not win the crown was because her home country requires visas for 175 countries. This statement immediately shocked many people, as it implied that a contestant’s chance of winning depends not only on talent, performance, or leadership, but also on passport power and travel freedom. His comment also reopened the debate about whether the pageant truly offers equal opportunities to all contestants, especially those from smaller or less wealthy nations.

Olivia Yacé, who resigned from her title as Miss Universe Africa and Oceania shortly after the event, has been widely seen as one of the strongest contestants of the year. Many believed she had the qualities, grace, and global appeal to win the crown. Her unexpected loss had already caused disappointment among fans, but the MUO president’s explanation added a new layer of frustration. Rocha also compared the popularity of contestants by their social media following, mentioning the new winner from Mexico and the number of followers past winners had. This added to concerns that popularity and online image may be influencing results more than merit.

Online reactions were immediate and intense. Many comments on social media described Olivia as the “real winner” and expressed anger that administrative or political factors might determine the outcome of an international competition. People questioned how fair the judging process could be if visa requirements were taken into account. Some accused the organisation of disrespecting nations that face travel restrictions and of ignoring the principles of diversity and inclusion that the pageant claims to promote.

Miss Guadeloupe, Ophély Mézino, reacted strongly after hearing Rocha’s comments. She questioned the integrity of the organisation and expressed her frustration on Instagram, saying these statements insult the hard work and dreams of contestants from smaller nations. She reminded the MUO president that many competitors already submit their visa details during the application process, and that using visas as an excuse is unfair and misleading. Her emotional message reflected a deep sense of injustice felt by many participants and fans worldwide.

Olivia Yacé’s resignation also added to the emotional intensity of the situation. In her statement, she explained that she stepped down to stay true to her values—respect, dignity, excellence, and equal opportunity. She said she wanted to continue inspiring young women from African and Afro-descendant communities and that keeping her integrity was more important than holding a title. Her message touched many hearts and highlighted the importance of representation and fairness in global platforms.

The overall situation has placed the Miss Universe Organisation under pressure, with many demanding clarity, reforms, and greater transparency. For many people, this controversy shows the need to rethink how international competitions treat contestants from diverse backgrounds. The debate continues to grow, and the organisation now faces the difficult task of rebuilding trust and proving that all contestants are treated fairly, no matter where they come from or what passport they hold.
