At least four people were killed in Uttar Pradesh's Mirzapur district when an oncoming train struck them after they stepped onto the tracks at Chunar junction. The group had disembarked from the Chopan-Prayagraj Express and moved across the rails instead of remaining on the platform side; they were struck by the Howrah-Kalka Netaji Express coming from the opposite direction.
Railway officials said early indications point to unsafe track crossing by the passengers rather than a technical fault. Emergency services and local police reached the scene quickly to assist survivors and collect evidence as railway investigators opened an inquiry into the circumstances.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath offered condolences to the bereaved families and directed authorities to accelerate relief efforts and ensure all injured receive urgent treatment. State and rail officials have been instructed to coordinate the response and speed up the inquiry.
The tragedy highlights continuing safety challenges at many stations. Railway authorities reiterated warnings to use foot overbridges and follow prescribed safety procedures across India's vast rail network to prevent similar fatalities.
