How Janhvi Kapoor's Eating Technique Can Aid Weight Control: Insights from a Gastroenterologist

Post by : Saif Nasser

Embracing a slower eating pace and thorough chewing might appear straightforward, yet it significantly impacts digestion and weight control. Recently, Dr. Pal Manickam, a gastroenterologist in California, discussed an eating strategy used by actress Janhvi Kapoor that aids in hunger regulation and prevents overeating. This method emphasizes the importance of mindful eating and being present with each bite.

During the promotion of her movie Param Sundari alongside Siddharth Malhotra, Janhvi Kapoor was observed savoring her food in smaller portions. Although the servings looked ample, she was eating with intention and restraint. Dr. Manickam referenced this instance to illustrate how chewing food properly signals fullness to the brain, enhances digestion, and mitigates excessive eating.

The notion of thorough chewing has both historical and empirical backing. In the late 1800s, Horace Fletcher, dubbed the “Great Masticator,” popularized the idea of chewing food until it resembled liquid for better digestion. Dr. Manickam notes the notion of 32 chews relates to the number of adult teeth. Slow chewing facilitates communication between the gut and brain via the vagus nerve, transmitting signals like “I’m full” and “I feel calm,” thus aiding individuals in recognizing when to stop eating and promoting effective digestion.

Moreover, mindful chewing impacts hunger-regulating hormones. Thorough chewing increases leptin, which indicates fullness, while decreasing ghrelin, which instigates hunger. This balance assists in curbing cravings, regulating portion sizes, and avoiding overeating. Dr. Manickam highlights that even slight changes in chewing practices can yield substantial benefits for digestion and weight control over time.

For actionable advice, Dr. Manickam proposes the 15-15-15 guideline. Instead of counting to 32 for each bite, he recommends taking a bite, chewing for 15 seconds, pausing for 15 seconds, and dedicating a minimum of 15 minutes to each meal. This method encourages diners to slow down, appreciate their food, and eliminate distractions such as phones or televisions. Beginning with just one daily meal can cultivate this habit, enhancing digestion, curtailing overeating, and making dining more pleasurable.

Integrating mindful eating into everyday life doesn't necessitate complex diets or pricey supplements. By focusing on the act of eating and allowing ample time for proper chewing, individuals can improve digestion, feel satisfied with smaller portions, and boost their overall health. Dr. Manickam urges readers to implement this technique during their next meal and observe the positive changes it can bring.
