Microsoft introduces redesigned Start Menu in Windows 11 October update

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

Microsoft has begun distributing a redesigned Start Menu as part of its October 2025 non-security patch (KB5067036) for Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2. The refresh delivers a streamlined, modern interface intended to simplify navigation and surface apps more efficiently.

The updated Start Menu adopts a dynamic landing page that places installed applications front and center. Users can toggle between a categorized presentation and the traditional alphabetical list, while options exist to conceal sections such as "Pinned" and "Recommended" for a cleaner desktop. A new flexibility to pin additional apps directly to the main view makes frequently used tools faster to reach.

Layout behavior has also been improved to suit varying screen sizes: on larger displays the menu scales to show more pinned or suggested apps, optimizing available space. Adjacent to the Start Menu, Microsoft has added a refreshed Phone Link panel, enabling quicker access to smartphone alerts and messages from both Android and iOS without leaving the desktop.

Outside of the menu overhaul, the update includes modest but practical taskbar adjustments. Users will observe smoother thumbnail animations and an updated battery icon that now shows the charge percentage continuously. These incremental changes aim to refine day-to-day productivity and polish the overall Windows experience.

The redesigned Start Menu is being rolled out gradually to devices enrolled in early access for new features via Windows Update. Microsoft has signaled a broader distribution is planned for the November Patch Tuesday deployment.

Users eager to receive the change sooner can enable the "Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available" option in Windows Update settings. The release underscores Microsoft's ongoing efforts to make Windows 11 more adaptable, efficient and user-centric.
