Tragic Death of US Food Influencer Michael Duarte Following Knife Incident

Post by : Raina Nasser

In a heartbreaking turn of events, Michael Duarte, widely known as "FoodWithBearHands," was fatally shot during an encounter with police in Castroville, Texas, on November 8. Authorities reported that the incident occurred after a deputy responded to a call about a “male subject with a knife acting erratically.” Duarte allegedly threatened the officers with the weapon, prompting the deputy to discharge his firearm.

Upon arrival, the deputy commanded Duarte to drop the knife and get down, but he reportedly advanced towards the officer while declaring, "I'm going to kill you." This alarming behavior led to the deputy firing two rounds at Duarte.

Despite receiving medical assistance and being transported to University Hospital in San Antonio, he was pronounced dead shortly afterward. The Medina County Sheriff’s Office revealed that Duarte displayed erratic behavior and was perceived as a significant threat to both Fire and EMS personnel.

A California native, Duarte had amassed a substantial following on social media for his barbecue and grilling content. His untimely death has left many fans and peers in the culinary sphere in disbelief. Reports indicate that he may have been experiencing a mental health crisis prior to the confrontation.

Alooma Media Group, Duarte’s talent agency, expressed profound sadness over this tragic loss. They characterized him as a devoted family man and a remarkable individual, saying, “Michael was much more than just a client — he was a cherished friend and partner, whose impact resonated with all who knew him.”

To help his family cope with funeral expenses and facilitate his return to California, a GoFundMe campaign has been initiated. The funds will provide support for his wife, Jessica, and their young daughter, Oakley, during this challenging period.

Duarte’s passing is a poignant reminder of the critical need for mental health awareness and the unforeseen circumstances that can arise during police interactions.
