Lionel Messi has voiced his unwavering support for Neymar, urging that the iconic Brazilian forward deserves a spot in Brazil's lineup for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, despite his ongoing injury issues.
As Brazil’s record goal scorer with 79 international goals, Neymar has not donned the national jersey since an unfortunate knee injury in October 2023. His recent stint with Santos has seen him struggle to achieve consistent performance and full match fitness.
Brazil's head coach Carlo Ancelotti mentioned that Neymar will be evaluated for selection once he proves his fitness levels. Previously, Ancelotti remarked that the time frame for Neymar to demonstrate readiness for international play is notably limited.
During his appearance on the “Lo del Pollo” program, Messi emphasized Neymar's status as one of the finest players globally, arguing that if Brazil is to field its best possible team, Neymar must be considered, regardless of his current form. Messi also expressed excitement about the prospect of Neymar participating in the World Cup, citing his significant value to Brazil and to football in general.
With Messi recently leading Argentina to victory in the 2022 World Cup, he identified Brazil as a top contender for the upcoming tournament, alongside Spain and France. He noted that Brazil consistently boasts the talent and skill required to challenge for major accolades.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup will take place across Canada, the United States, and Mexico, kicking off on June 11.
